certificate
An electronic recognition that a student has completed all the courses grouped together as a certificate program. Certificates may be permanent, or they may expire after a given time.

certificate category
An organizational category that contains one or more WBT Manager™ certificate programs.

certificate program
A group of courses that can be assigned to students as a block. It may optionally award an electronic certificate when a student completes all required courses.

child element
In any hierarchy or tree view, an element at the next lower level that is contained by the given element. For example, a department's child elements are the students assigned to that department.

client-server
A network arrangement in which one or more computers, called clients, can request information from and send information to a central computer, called the server.

CMI
Acronym for Computer Managed Instruction. Often used in reference to just the management system component of the instruction. The term is typically used interchangeably with Learning Management System (LMS).

command line
A line of data sent to the Web server to launch a lesson. It includes the URL to the lesson's first file and several other key pieces of information to allow the lesson to communicate with WBT Manager™.

completion requirement
Stated criteria for completing a course element. The default completion requirement for lessons is obtaining a status of Completed or Passed. The default requirement for instructional blocks and courses is completing all lessons contained in the given element. The AICC specification allows you to define special completion requirements for any course element. These may be based on completing (or in some cases failing to complete) any combination of blocks, lessons, and objectives.

Computer Managed Instruction
Software that sequences instructional activities for a student, and provides the interface for student access to the activities. Usually provides functions for course construction, student registration, course enrollment, assignment management, and data gathering.

content aggregation
In the SCORM specification, a structured group of instructional content, including assets, SCOs, and other content aggregations.

content (file)
Actual learning materials (such as text, graphics, quizzes, or simulations) that can be displayed to the student. Lesson and reference item records point to content files that can be launched by WBT Manager™. See also, resource.

content provider / training provider
The vendor or other source of a given piece of learning content. The standards specifications require course import/export files to associate a provider with the overall course course and with each course element. WBT Manager™ also has this requirement, even for files that you do not intend to export.

Content Structure Format
A special file format used by SCORM version 1.1 for interchanging the block and lesson structure of a course between learning management systems (LMSs). WBT Manager™ can use CSF files for importing courses and can export CSF files for courses you build within the system.

context-sensitive
In reference to an element of an application's interface, changing to provide appropriate information or options depending on what activity is in progress when the element is invoked.

context menu
In Microsoft® Windows®, a menu that appears when you right-click at a particular location or on a particular object. It offers choices relevant to the selected location or object.

core data elements
In both the AICC and SCORM specifications, a standard set of data elements that must be available to be passed to and from a lesson by the management system. It includes such items as the student's name and ID, lesson score, lesson status, and time spent in the lesson.

course
A complete hierarchical learning structure consisting of one or more lessons and/or instructional blocks. The course is the unit of learning that is imported and exported by WBT Manager™ and other LMSs.

course catalog
In the student module, a list of available courses and certificate programs. If desired, it can provide self-enrollment capabilities. It can also be configured to hide courses and certificate programs that the student is not eligible to take.

course element
A member of a defined course hierarchy. In WBT Manager, the course elements are course, instructional block, lesson, reference item, and objective.

or

A specific element that is a member of a specific course.

course hierarchy
The sequence of instructional levels that makes up a course. The AICC and SCORM specifications each defines a hierarchy for courses. WBT Manager's hierarchy incorporates the characteristics of both standards-defined hierarchies.

course interchange
A means by which the structure and key information about any standards-conformant course can be exchanged between management systems. The AICC interchange method makes use of several files that contain the required information in plain text format. The SCORM interchange method uses an XML file.

Course Interchange Files
A set of files defined in the AICC specification for transferring the structure and other key information about a course from one LMS to another.

course structure
The defined hierarchical relationship between a course and the elements that make it up. This structure is independent of the course's learning content, which can be used by other entirely different course structures.

courseware
Training materials designed for computer-based delivery.
